Just after a week of cancelling Iron Fist, and on the release day of Daredevil season 3, Netflix cancels another Marvel show: Luke Cage. The show will not be returning for a new season.
“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and all the fans who have supported the series.”, Marvel and Netflix said in a joint statement on Friday.
It was surprising getting this news as a writer’s room under the showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker had been working for around past six months creating scripts and developing the next season. Due to the same reason, it was expected that the third season for Luke Cage is not likely to get the axe when the Iron Fist was canned
According to sources, Netflix and Marvel could not reach an agreement on how to move forward with the show. Luke Cage season 3 is reportedly cancelled due to “creative differences” between the parties involved.
On the cancellation of Iron Fist, Deadline speculated that the show might come back to Disney’s streaming platform that is supposed to come out next year, but the case is not the same for Luke Cage. In spite of the show crashing the Netflix over the releasing weekend during season 1 and having amazing viewership continuing with season 2.
With Iron Fist and Luke Cage gone, only three Marvel series remain on Netflix: Daredevil, Jessica Jones and The Punisher. With half of the Defenders gone, there seems no hope for a new season of The Defenders. While Daredevil just released its season 3, Krysten Ritter-led Jessica Jones and Jon Bernthal-led The Punisher are in production and progressing as planned for their respective seasons.
Will Mike Colter-led Luke Cage carry on when Disney launches their streaming platform? Only time will tell. How do you feel about the cancellation of this show? Let us know on our socials: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
